My job at The Daily Aztec

I was the Editor in Chief at The Daily Aztec from May 2008 until May 2009. The Daily Aztec is completely student-run newspaper that prints 10,000 copies each day to the San Diego State campus and local area, Monday through Thursday. Most of the staff is paid hourly. The paper’s money soley is generated through ads that our advertising team (also all students) establishes each year. I handled the budget, the staff, the runsheets (page counts, ad placements, color, etc.) and many meetings. It was a very time-consuming job, but I loved it with everything that I had. I was completely dedicated to the benefit of the paper and to my staff.

As the Editor in Chief of The Daily Aztec, I over-saw the production and finances. No faculty adviser. The money the newspaper has is generated through advertising. My direct reports were the Art Director, Advertising Director and two managing editors.  I ensured that the paper runs smoothly, I corrected personnel issues, trained the editors, held meetings, helped with special issues, made the runsheets, overlooked the advertising department and had control over the budget.

We just recently won 11 CCMA Awards, including 4 first place awards. The San Diego SPJ Awards will presented later this month.
